Looking forward to this!! My only other reference to this era would be a show that includes Don “Sugarcane” Harris. Thanks BigO for this share….thank you Darth for your insight. The rarest material i think is the earliest. and something can be said for pretty much every tour. altho those 74 shows with jean luc ponty are amazing. i havent heard this or seen it since the late 90s.

while it is possible he could have made a trip just to complete a contractual obligation and perhaps it is even possible a show was scheduled for the 8th and might have needed to be rescheduled etc. and other shows he did coincide with him being on that side of the country and in that area. i personally believe that its 2-8…because i had it from a casette tape that was from a non vinyl source in the mid 80s and it was labeled 2-8. i am not 100% sure myself which is correct but the duplicated ‘2′ could be a mistake just repeating the ‘feb’ thing. Neil slaven took his info from the vinyl bootleg that came out in the late 70s. Incredibly different from any other Zappa I’ve ever heard (including the Hot Rats album), but wonderful in its own way. 9 Responses to “FRANK ZAPPA - SAN DIEGO 1970”.(Readers can email us a request to reopen closed shows.) To muddy the dates further, Neil Slaven’s Zappa: Electric Don Quixote (1996) only mentions a February 28 gig at San Diego’s Sports Arena, very likely with Aynsley Dunbar on drums.Īccording to, “every song in these… shows is essentially an excuse for extended solos… These… shows contain Frank’s best solos of the early ’70’s”. The Frank Zappa Gig List: 1970 lists the February 28 date as “spurious”. While this is listed and generally accepted as February 8, 1970, it has also been shared as February 28, 1970. The sound is far from pristine (imagine AM radio plus hiss) but it’s serviceable and, more importantly, listenable. It kind of “dropped out of sight” on the net and here is the Hot Rats band, especially for the collectors. Good to fairly good audience recording, a bit of hiss. Live at The Sports Arena, San Diego, CA February 8, 1970.
